How to run a pub quiz

A practical checklist for first-time and regular quiz hosts.

1. Pick a format

Most UK pub quizzes run 5-8 rounds of 10 questions, take 90-120 minutes, and allow teams of up to six. Announce the team limit in advance.

2. Prepare materials

3. Set the rules out loud

No phones, the quizmaster's answer is final, spelling rules (be lenient unless it matters), and how marking works: swap sheets between teams or mark centrally.

4. Pace it

Read each question twice, leave about 30 seconds between questions, and collect sheets at the end of each round. Give scores after every two rounds to keep things lively.

5. Prizes and entry

A small entry fee with a drinks voucher or bar tab prize is common. If you run a cash jackpot or rollover, check whether gambling or lottery rules apply in your area; small society lotteries and prize competitions have their own rules.

6. Check your answers

Wrong answers are the most common source of arguments. Use questions with sources you can show if challenged.

Every PintQuiz pack includes a host script with a source for every answer.
